Jari Perkiömäki Biography
One of Finland's top jazz musicians, alto and soprano saxman Jari Perkiomaki will be guesting with GREAT SPIRIT for the duration of their forthcoming UK tour 21 October - 4 November 2006.
Born in Pori in 1961, Jari studied at the Helsinki Conservatory and was voted 'Musician of the Year' in 1985 by the Finnish 'Rytmi' magazine. He gained his PhD in 2002 with a thesis on the music of Lennie Tristano and Ornette Coleman and is now head of the jazz department of the prestigious Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Perkiomaki's own trio/quartet has toured all over the world since 1984, including festival appearances in Leverkusen (Germany), Debrecen (Hungary), Messina (Italy), Paris, New York, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Tallinn, Santorini (Greece), Mexico and Venezuela, and released two albums, 'Jari Perkiomaki Quartet' (1985) and 'Shades' (1997).
Joining the Pori Big Band in 1977, aged only 16, he appeared at festivals in New York (1979), Detroit, (1982) Nice (1980) and Warsaw (Jazz Jamboree 1983), more recently conducting the band at the Pori Jazz Festival (2005) with special guest Kenny Garrett. Other international artists he has played with include Ernie Wilkins, Frank Foster, Thad Jones, Lew Soloff, Mike Nock sextet (Australian tour), Reggie Workman/Andrew Cyrille 4tet, Don Preston 4tet, Freddie Redd 4tet, Anders Jormin, Ake Johansson and Dag Arnesen. Previous appearances in the UK include London concerts with the Mika Mylläri Quintet and with Ed Jones and Jonathan Gee in 2000.
