SIGI FINKEL

Sigi Finkel is one of Austria's best-known saxophonists, a dynamic and passionate player based in Vienna. He recently signed with SONY and is currently receiving extensive European promotion for his band Dooptroop, an Austro-American collaboration featuring US "Defunkt" trombonist Joseph Bowie.

His discography also includes CDs with John Abercrombie, Enrico Rava, Wolfgang Puschnig, Tomas Stanko and the Senegalese musicians of his band AFRICAN HEART.

"Sigi Finkel...should attract saxophone-loving listeners looking for more musical and emotional adventure than the average sax idol has to offer."
JAZZ TIMES (USA)

"With a powerful, glowing tone, Sigi Finkel... maintains his identity without leaning on any specific school or tradition."
THE JAZZ DICTIONARY

Tim and Sigi co-lead two very different outfits: an acoustic DUO, and an electric quartet named SOUNDSCAPE. Details of both are given below.

SIGI FINKEL/ TIM RICHARDS DUO

Sigi's partnership with Tim Richards dates from 1996 when they broadcast two DUO sessions for BBC Radio "Impressions" and "Kaleidoscope". The duo subsequently recorded the CD Dervish Dances for the Austrian Radio label, toured in Central Europe, played at the London Jazz Festival in 1998, and in January 2000 gave a live concert at Vienna's ORF Radiokulturhaus opposite the Ralph Towner/Gary Peacock duo.

Most recently the duo toured in central Europe Jan-Feb 2001.

Dervish Dances CD - Reviews

"Covers an impressive range, from funky blues to free improvisation. They complement each other so well that you simply don't miss the rest of the band."
Dave Gelly THE OBSERVER

"The music covers a typically wide post-bop spectrum, and even includes an unexpectedly incisive account of Over the Rainbow, but it's worth it for the furious boogie-woogie exchange of Hey! on its own."
John Fordham THE GUARDIAN

"What makes this so refreshing is the individualism and inherent depth of the writing. Richards sustains an elegance of invention from the catchy post-bop riff of Tollbridge to the relaxed groove of Back Street Blues."
CADENCE Magazine (USA)

The band toured the UK in May 1997, appearing at the BATH International Jazz Festival, and have now released their debut CD Shibop on the Future Music label, receiving a 4-star review in Jazzwise Magazine ("an oustanding issue").

In April 2000 their European tour included dates in France, Switzerland and Germany, and culminated at the CHELTENHAM International Jazz Festival (for tour schedule please see below).

5-10 October 2000: MOROCCO Rabat "JAZZ AUX OUDAYAS" Festival
(collaboration with Moroccan traditional musicians)

SOUNDSCAPE - press quotes

"Richards and Finkel are capable of recapturing that early spirit of adventure... The music is lively, well-paced and intelligently programmed. What more could you want?"
JAZZWISE Magazine - 4 stars (an outstanding issue)

"SOUNDSCAPE always manages to come up with something new... an exhilarating mixture of contemporary jazz-funk and the more pacey European variety."
THE OBSERVER

"Richards mans various keyboards in somewhat Hancockian mode... the range of influences is commendably wide."
MUSICIAN Magazine

"Young Austrian saxophonist Finkel's punchy phrasing and impassioned sound are making waves."
THE GUARDIAN

"Tim Richards plays bluesy jazz piano with a fiercely contemporary edge and his compositions are lushly melodic. A feast of contemporary jazz from two gutsy performers."
EVENING STANDARD Hot Tickets

"Real, spirited, emotional music, with a strong link to the blues."
INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY

"Glorious players both, assured use of electronics, bill-topper material."
