The long awaited follow-up to 'Improvising Blues Piano' is not so much a tutor, more a collection of repertoire for solo piano. Suitable for intermediate to advanced pianists, it is ideal for those looking to explore these styles in more depth.
The collection includes 13 originals in variety of blues styles. The remaining two pieces are special arrangements of the gospel classic 'Wade in the Water', and the iconic Jelly Roll Morton number 'The Jelly Roll Blues'.
Transcribed solos and chord symbols are provided for each tune to aid improvisation, and the book comes with a recording of all the pieces, played by Tim. This was intially provided as a CD, but the latest edition comes with an audio download instead.
Each piece is accompanied by brief notes on interpretation, technique, theory and performance; there's also an 8-page section featuring Coordination Tips and sections on 'Pentatonics & Blues Scales' and 'Improvising with Arpeggios & Modes'.
All 15 pieces are now also available as separate PDF downloads from the Schott website.
"An instant classic, earning an immediate place at the top table. These are deeply felt, expertly realised and above all authentic pieces that will not only hopefully open up the world of blues piano playing to a new wave of enthusiasts, but which are classics in their own right. Proves itself not simply as the best 'jazz piano' publication of the year, but probably the best of the decade so far."
